Book Tiny Blunders/Big Disasters: Thirty-Nine Tiny Mistakes That Changed the World Forever (Revised Edition) Review :

Georgia author Jared E. Knott was a decorated combat infantry officer in the First Cavalry Division in Vietnam, serves as vice president of sales and marketing and marketing director in the home improvement industry, and has published articles in graduate school textbooks and in the Mensa Bulletin (American Mansa is a round-table society for highly intelligent people, people with a high IQ) on subjects from Supreme Court Reform to Arctic Exploration. He also happens to be an inquisitive historian! In what may just become the favorite book about history yet published, Knott reveals his in depth knowledge and investigative techniques of closely examining events and people of world history that invite scrutiny, and in doing so he distills the ‘tiny blunders and big disasters’ around the globe and throughout history that perk up our minds. As he states in the introductory note, ‘An ongoing argument among scholars and non-scholars alike, originating decades or perhaps centuries ago, concerns whether great individuals shape history or are themselves shaped by blind forces beyond their control…The main message of this book is that details left unattended or seemingly small items that are overlooked can snowball into disaster in the long or even the short term. The devil is in the details. Of course, in human affairs, perfection is unattainable. But the reader should reflect on the innumerable avoidable disasters that have occurred as a result of tiny blunders and oversights.’Understanding ‘the butterfly effect’ is essential for full appreciation of the text: ‘the sensitive dependence on initial conditions in which a small change in one state of a deterministic nonlinear system can result in large differences in a later state.’ Knott examines thirty-nine such butterfly effects and the result in an edifying, immensely entertaining and insightful closer look at history. A sample of such events includes how an unopened letter saved the American Cause in the Revolutionary War, how a lone hunter in the African bush precipitated the AIDS pandemic, how a German pilot’s small mistake saved Britain and changed the course of WW II, how a chauffeur’s wrong turn sparked two world wars, and, regarding Murphy’s Law, how industrial accidents and technological catastrophes were caused by small but perhaps inevitable human errors. A brief example, ‘a single piece of tape [discovered by Watergate night watchman Frank Wills] triggered the Watergate investigation – a chain reaction that damaged the presidency [Nixon] and changed the outcome of the Vietnam war!’The spectrum of this montage of tales is immense, spanning from ancient times to contemporary events, with Knott’s superlative prose creating a seductive glimpse into such figures and events as Robert E Lee, Henning von Tresckow, General (and President) Eisenhower, Mussolini, Napoleon Bonaparte, Kaiser Wilhelm, Edward Norton Lorenz, Nixon, LBJ, Theresa LaPore, Ladybird Johnson, Queen Anne Boleyn, Maxwell Taylor, Joseph Goebbles, General Patton, Andrew ‘Stonewall’ Jackson, Sam Houston, Hitler, Atul Gawande, the V-1 and V-2 Rocket – abetted by photographs and artwork. Every ‘tiny blunder’ is exposed and related like a novel of imaginative fiction – except that each is true. There are opinions, and there are facts: facts can be proved, and that is what Knott does so well. As he states in his closing remarks, ‘It is one thing to know that small mistakes can be greatly damaging. It is something else to know how to avoid them… This book has taken the reader through a great circuit of human experience from one end of the world to the other. But in the final analysis, my final message to the reader is as follows: please be careful, both young and old, for the devil is indeed in the details.’This is one of the most energetically satisfying books about history – and about the way we remember – to grace the shelves. Very highly recommended. Grady Harp, November 20
Tiny Blunders/Big Disasters: Thirty-Nine Mistakes That Changed the World Forever is a fascinating collection of stories of how human error, poor judgment, or poor planning changed the course of major events in history. Author Jared Knott shares detailed historical accounts leading up to such events. For many readers, these stories are ones that may not have been taught in school. For this reason, I consider some of these stories little-known history facts. The author opens with an explanation of the “butterfly effect”, a term in chaos theory. He states that, “a small event can contribute to or produce a big effect in a chain of events”. In this case, tiny blunders at times causing big disasters. The stories of human error and perhaps miscommunication reveal how lives could have been saved had certain people had been more attentive to their jobs. Three such stories are about the tragic endings of the Titanic, the Hindenburg, and Apollo 13.There are also interesting details about the failed assassination attempts of Presidents Theodore Roosevelt, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, and Barack Obama. One very timely story is about how a poorly designed ballot caused a win for George W. Bush against Al Gore during the 2000 presidential election. The question of “what-if” is posed at the end of most stories that will leave readers pondering the very thought themselves. Other types of blunders recorded in this book were decisions made in medical science involving important figures in history.History buffs will enjoy reading these stories and may be compelled to share them in conversation. With so many details included, I found that these are important pieces of history we all should know. I promise that once you begin reading you will keep turning one page after another.
